Top 15 Anime Similar to Wonder Egg Priority - In atmosphere, plot or theme
Wonder Egg Priority is a unique blend of coming-of-age, allegory, horror, psychology, and fantasy. It portrays the pains and the painful awkwardness of growing up while being somehow both wholesome and melancholic. If you’re a teen, the story is highly relatable, and if you’re already in adulthood, it is bittersweet and beautiful. In the alternate realities drenched in psychedelic colors and strange fights, Wonder Egg Priority manages to dive deeply into controversial dark topics and disturbing notions of growing up, exploring mental health, trauma, and abuse - subjects that many anime prefer to stir clear from. If you are looking for animes with a similar theme, plot, or overall atmosphere, here’s a list of recommendations that are very similar to Wonder Egg Priority while still maintaining their own originality.
1.Iroduku: The World in Colors
色づく世界の明日から - Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara
17-year-old Hitomi Tsukishiro has magical powers in a world where a small fraction of the population are witches/mages. Albeit this 'fantasy' aspect, the story is more slice-of-life in a world where magic just happens to exist. The story takes place in the past, as Hitomi's grandmother -for reasons she does not reveal- casts a spell and sends her back to when she herself was still in high school. While there are no fights with mystical creatures or high-adrenaline scenes, the overall atmosphere of Iroduku greatly resembles that of Wonder Egg Priority: it is lightheartedly peaceful yet incredibly sad and is composed of stunning visuals that might make you pause just to admire the sceneries. Other similarities lie in the fact that both anime are coming-of-age stories, both protagonists have difficulties opening up, and both of their psyches are deeply explored through the use of colors and surreal scenes.

2. Mahou Shoujo Site
魔法少女サイト - Magical Girl Site
Aya Asagiri is relentlessly bullied at school, she has no friends, and even at home, her older brother physically abuses her. One night, as she lies awake thinking about death, her computer turns on, and a question appears: would she like to become a Magical Girl? At first, she dismisses this as some kind of malfunction, but as she is faced with escalated abuse at school, she decides to accept. Becoming a Magical Girl grants you powers, some of which can be used to kill. Aside from the similar obvious points in the plot and magical surrealist aspects, Mahou Shoujo Site deals with many similar themes explored in Wonder Egg Priority: suicide, bullying, depression, bullying, abuse, and trauma. The show illuminates the various pains of young adolescence and portrays different psychological concepts through its battles. One thing to note is that Mahou Shoujo Site deals with these dark themes much more graphically than Wonder Egg Priority, and one common critique is that this anime is too ‘edgy.’

3.Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
青春ブタ野郎 - SEISHUN BUTA YARŌ
Ex-teenage actress Sakurajima Mai is slowly becoming invisible to everyone around her. As she tests out her invisibility, she walks around in a bunny suit and is shocked to meet a boy who can actually see her. In this encounter, our plot begins: how will our male protagonist Sakuta find a cure to this ‘Puberty Syndrome,’ a new affliction where bruises, cuts, invisibility, or self juxtaposition seemingly appear out of nowhere? Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai is quite similar to Wonder Egg Priority due to the fact that ‘Puberty Syndrome’ is caused by emotions: gossip or bad-mouth someone, and you might end up slashing their abdomen, fall in love, and you might create someone whom you think would fit your partner better than yourself. Both stories deal with mental health issues and inner conflicts and are more centered around character development, albeit Bunny Girl Senpai is more goofy and light-hearted.

4.Sonny Boy
Sonny boy tells the story of thirty-six students who suddenly find themselves and their school building adrift in an empty black void—seemingly shipped to another dimension, some of the students awake to supernatural powers. They come to realize that they are also able to travel from one dimension to another if they follow a set of strict rules. Trying to find their own world, they deal with mysterious phenomenons, and unique challenges that force them to confront a lot of their inner struggles - these scenarios serve a unique inspection of human behavior under stress. This anime is similar to Wonder Egg Priority as it is also a surrealist psychological character drama with a high emphasis on human nature and teenagehood. Its atmosphere is also as bizarre and confusing as that of WEP, with similar protagonists with low self-esteem who slowly but surely gain friendships along their journey. The main difference would be that Sonny boy is much more indie-like and less colorful than WEP.

5.A Place Further than the Universe
宇宙よりも遠い場所 - Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
A Place Further than the Universe follows the captivating journey of four young girls as they attempt to travel to Antarctica -yes, you've read this correctly. Each of them is going there for a reason: be it to finally experience something new in their life, to prove to themselves that they are capable of achieving something on their own, or to try to stand out for once. Each of these reasons is linked to the unique pain of growing up, from wanting to make the most out of youth but not being able to or the need to establish their own personality. There is no surrealism or magic here; rather, its similarity to Wonder Egg Priority is in its outstanding sceneries and animation, as well as its main focus point on the importance and development of friendships. There is also an overwhelming sense of wonder throughout the whole story.

6.Urasekai Picnic
裏世界ピクニック - Otherside Picnic
Sorao and Toriko meet in The Otherside, an alternate realm home to eerie creatures capable of communicating with humans through their darkest fears. The two girls quickly form a friendship as Toriko brings Sorao along with her to search for artifacts to sell and look for her lost friend in this metaphysical dimension filled with supernatural threats. This anime follows the same plot structure as Wonder Egg Priority, even giving Sorao heterochromia after one of her battles. Our protagonists change with each experience they encounter, and we get to explore the forming of their friendships and their inner struggles. Although it quite resembles WEP, I personally found it lacked a certain layer of depth to make it as enjoyable as its counterpart.

7.Anohana: the flower we saw that day
あの日見た花の名前を僕達はまだ知らない。- Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
Anohana dictates the story of a childhood friend group who has grown apart after one of its members, Honma Meiko, died in a tragic accident. Years later, the dead girl appears to one of them, Jinta Yadomi, asking him to help her cross over to the afterlife. Jinta lives the life of a hermit, playing video games and not attending school; he hasn’t even spoken to any of his old group members in years. In trying to achieve Meiko’s wish, he must face his pain and guilt and rekindle old friendships, some belonging to people who now hate him. AnoHana resembles Wonder Egg Priority in dealing with childhood grief and emotional turmoil, its interception of friendships, and its slight magical aspect.

8.Id:Invaded
イド:インヴェイデッド
The Mizuhanome System is a program that enables people to enter the human mind. By collecting ‘cognition particles’ left behind at crime scenes by the perpetrator, detectives can construct the virtual worlds of the murder’s mind and, through its exploration, reveal the identity of the culprit. A twist: this psychological plane can only be accessed by people who have themselves also killed someone. As such, we follow detective Akihito Narihisago as he solves a series of murder cases that might be interconnected. While Id: Invaded deals with adulthood and is more science fiction than fantasy, it is still very similar to Wonder Egg Priority in ambiance and plot: alternate simulated realities, disorderly illogical worlds, fights against a common enemy, and psychological introspection. If you like WEP and you’re also a fan of psychological murder mysteries, you’ll probably love this one.

9.Violet Evergarden
ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン
After a four-year-long war, the continent of Telesis becomes divided into two, and each side slowly starts to recover. Violet Evergarden, a young girl, raised as a soldier whose only goal was to decimate enemy lines, finds herself in a hospital, slowly recovering and with no new goal of her own. She begins a new life as a Postal Service official where she discovers the use of an "Auto Memory Doll," an entity that works to assist others by writing for them. Moved by the words she read, she takes on the job herself. This eventually leads to a deep introspection of her past crimes and trauma, inner conflict, and a quest to more deeply understand her human characteristics that had to be hidden when she was used as a war weapon. Here, the similarity to Wonder Egg Priority isn't as striking as in other anime in this listings. Still, it is present nonetheless, specifically in an immensely beautiful, colorful, and detailed animation style and in the presence of past traumas and mental turmoils that need to be overcome through self-analysis and growth.

10.Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
魔法少女まどか★マギカ - Puella Magi Madoka Magica
14-year-old Madoka Kaname and her friend Sayaka Miki are offered an opportunity: a magical being will grant each a wish in exchange for becoming magical girls. Magical girls fight witches who are catalysts of human despair, fear, and trauma. As this offer is being made, magical girl Homura approaches them and urges them not to accept, stating that things are more complicated than they seem. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica seems like a whimsical, cutesy anime, but this is only a veil. Just like Wonder Egg Priority, it deals with incredibly dark themes involving teen girls. In both anime, heroines get transported into surreal worlds where they have to fight homicidal fantasy creatures. The witches in Madoka are also designed to reflect human trauma and negative psychological traits, just like the Wonder Killers in WEP.

11.Kyoukai no Kanata
境界の彼方- Beyond the Boundary
Mirai Kuriyama is the only remaining member of a clan of Spirit World Warriors with the power to bend her blood into a weapon. Her task is to hunt down and kill ‘‘Youmu’’, creatures born from negative human emotions and trauma. At her school, she meets Akihito Kanbara, a half-human half-youmu boy whom she immediately tries to kill. Akihito is immortal, so all her attempts end up only hurting him as he regenerates himself. The two eventually become friends, and through him, she meets other Spirit World warriors at the Literary Club of her school. While similar to Wonder Egg Priority in plot theme and atmosphere, displaying parallel emotional depth and beautiful animation style, Kyoukai no Kanata also has a romantic aspect, which is quite cute.

12.Mawaru Penguindrum
輪るピングドラム - Penguindrum
Twin brothers Kanba and Shouma live alone with their little sister Himari, whose poor health brings her to the verge of death. On the day she leaves the hospital, she suddenly collapses and seemingly dies. A mysterious penguin-like entity manages to revive and heal her, but this comes at a cost: in exchange, her brothers must find a mysterious thing called the "Penguin Drum." To aid in this quest, they are given three penguins who mainly act as a charming comical relief. Mawaru Penguindrum is a lot more lighthearted and humorous than Wonder Egg Priority but it still deals with similar themes: melancholia, mysteries surrounding death, and illness. The animation designs are also alike, both plot revolves around a mysterious magical object, and both protagonist's primary goal is related to saving a dying/dead loved one. Intelligent symbolism and imagery also play an important role, albeit perhaps even less clearly so than in WEP.

13. Serial Experiments Lain
シリアルエクスペリメンツレイン
Lain Iwakura, is an incredibly introverted bizarre 14-year-old and is one of several girls at her school to receive an email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda, who recently committed suicide. This email leads her into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks where she encounters further cryptic mysteries. As the boundaries of reality and cyberspace blur, questions of identity, consciousness, and the perception of the fabric of reality itself rise. Serial Experiments Lain is not an entertaining or heartwarming anime; it stretches the boundary of human imagination and provides new insights and notions about the role of technology in society and the perception of reality. The overall atmosphere and plot differ from that of Wonder Egg Priority. However, through the use of heavy symbolism and the exploration of similar dark psychological themes like suicide, I still chose to recommend this as a similar anime. If you enjoy metaphors and psychological concepts, you are in for a wild ride with this one.

14.Sarazanmai
さらざんまい
Middle school students Kazuki, Toi, and Enta accidentally break a kappa statue serving as the guardian god of the Asakusa district and are quickly turned into kappas themselves by Keppy, the prince of the Kappa Kingdom (Kappas are mystical creatures in Japanese folklore that look like a combination of frog and humans). Keppy then gives them a mission: they must fight the Kapa-zombies created by the Otters (yes, there are also mystical otters) through the manifestation of human’s deepest twisted desires. To defeat these entities, our three protagonists must connect with each other via their minds, bodies, and spirits. Sarazanmai is not an overly complicated show, but it is similar to Wonder Egg Priority in its weird premise and strange vibe. While it does deal with some darker themes, it remains an overall rather comical anime with some erhm.. questionable scenes.

15.Flip Flappers
フリップフラッパーズ
Middle schooler Cocona suddenly gets dragged into a world of pure illusions and alternate dimensions by Papika, a girl that is part of an organization called Flip Flap whose goal is to find crystal shards in these other realities. Dangerous creatures and entities inhabit these worlds, as well as rivals and enemies. This forces both protagonists into working together to synchronize their feelings as to use crystals to transform into magical warriors. Flip Flappers is much more episodic than Wonder Egg Priority and does not deal with as serious of themes. Its similarity lies in its dreamlike sequences of psychological portrayals through human consciousness, its slice-of-life setting, and, honestly, the pure confusion you get from initially watching it.
