Top 20 Funniest Comedy Anime That Will Make You Laugh Out Loud

Top 20 Funniest Comedy Anime That Will Make You Laugh Out Loud

Whether you’re looking for the occasional giggles or want to laugh so hard that you dislocate your lungs and need to be sent to the hospital, this list got you covered. Comedy is a subjective form of entertainment: some people enjoy dark humor while others prefer lighter stuff. Both kinds are welcomed here as the recommended anime series ranges from light-weight and heartwarming to filled with sarcasm and what is almost morally wrong. Settings are also various, from the slice-of-life to the action-packed.

Laughing is and will always be the best form of therapy, and I hope these funny anime series will leave you with a grin on your face.

+In no special order:

1.Hinamatsuri

ヒナまつり

Yakuza member Yoshifumi Nitta casually minded his own business at home when a girl trapped in an egg suddenly appeared in his living room, demanding that he presses on a button to let her out. Hinamatsuri is a completely whacky anime, and it takes a very different approach to comedy: you can’t put this show into one particular category as the style of jokes, randomness and sheer stupidity or intelligence of characters all work together to make you laugh out loud, but in a number of different ways. It is a fresh take among funny anime that usually rely on one style of comedy.

2.Detroit Metal City

デトロイト・メタル・シティ - DMC

This show is what you would get if, instead of re-recording her album, Taylor swift decided to kill everyone in her old recording label and write up new lyrics using their blood while giggling in the background and bopping her head to Hannah Montana songs. I’m sorry I created this image in your mind, but it is incidentally a very accurate depiction of the show.

Detroit Metal City is the story of a young man who goes to Tokyo in hopes of becoming an indie-pop musician but instead finds himself as the lead singer of a death metal band.

Now, I’m personally a fan of metal, but some of the lyrics you will hear might send you straight to hell (and make you cry out of laughter). I won’t spoil any songs from the actual show, but you can think of stuff along the lines of ‘‘Yesterday my puppy barked at me, so I killed him and ate him’’.

3.Kaguya-sama: Love is War

かぐや様は告らせたい~天才たちの恋愛頭脳戦~ - KAGUYA-SAMA WA KOKURASETAI: TENSAI-TACHI NO RENAI ZUNOUSEN

At first, Kaguya-sama will make you feel like you’re watching another generic romance anime. But, as your watch time progresses, so will the inherent need to explode into fits of laughter.

The genius style of animation leaves no scene static as everything is enormously emphasized and turned into a comedic depiction, leaving very little downtime in-between laughs. Excellent voiceovers, narration, grand orchestral musical elements, as well as the sheer randomness of references throughout this anime, from Samurais to Friedrich Nietzsche, make it a roller-coaster ride of a comedic experience.

4.Grand Blue Dreaming

ぐらんぶる

Grand Blue is fundamentally the equivalent of the series F.R.I.E.N.D.S if the cast was in college and drunk 24 hours a day, seven days a week (so in college). This anime follows the university experience of Iori Kitahara as he moves to a coastal town, taking resident above his uncle’s scuba diving shop, to study engineering. There is no real plot or great problem, this one is a full-on comedy anime with enjoyable characters, great entertainment, and a setting most of us can relate to. And for anyone who will point out that most of the characters go to engineering school and therefore cannot be drunk 24/7: as someone who has gone to engineering school, let me assure you that we are all indeed drunk 24/7 (something has to take the pain away). And if you’re wondering why I went from engineering school to writing anime reviews on my blog.. I… I want to be happy.

5.Shokugeki no Souma

食戟のソーマ - FOOD WARS!

Following his father's footsteps, Souma Yukihira decides to seriously pursue cooking at a world-renowned and prestigious culinary academy where only 10% of students manage to graduate each year. This anime is as funny as it is mouth-watering with brilliant and beautiful animation that will make you want to bathe into a bowl of ramen every time you watch it. The comedy is extremely unexpected and will catch you off guard, but be warned as a fair share of it is based on ecchi. Sometimes, the characters eat a dish that is so good it makes them scream in delight as their clothe disintegrate, and their bodies contort in weird ways. It's also important to note that the manga's illustrator is originally a hentai mangaka (teehee), so you've been warned.

6.Kakushigoto

かくしごと - Hidden Things

This one is for when you want to laugh out loud but also maybe cry yourself to sleep - which is my constant state of mind since 2020✨. Kakushigoto tells the story of a single father and his quest to keep a secret from his daughter: he is an ecchi mangaka. Beneath the surface of this goofy show that is a constant stream of smiles and laughs lies a bit of sweet melancholy that sneaks up on you at unexpected moments.

7.komi can’t communicate

古見さんは、コミュ症です。- KOMI-SAN WA, COMYUSHOU DESU.

Revered by her peers and considered as the most beautiful goddess of her school, Shouko Komi’s gentle and classy attitude is actually a misinterpretation of the fact that she’s incredibly shy and socially anxious. On her first day of high school, she meets Hitohito Tadano, a ‘Character C’ type of person who decides to help her get out of her shell and make friends even though he himself isn’t socially gifted in any way.

This anime series is wholesome, heart-warming, but also completely insane. It has some of the most unpredictable side characters that act normal on the surface but are actually nuts, deranged, and hysterical. The scenarios and situations depicted sometimes change 180 degrees in 1 second as cute and pure moments turn into something incredibly somber, horrific, or carnal.

8.Life Lessons With Uramichi-Oniisan

うらみちお兄さん

You probably won’t enjoy this show if your eyes are filled with sparkles and awe. To enjoy this anime, you need to have soulless eyes. You need to have been thrown into the world, chewed up by the realities of life, and not spit out but expelled out of the excretory opening at the end of its alimentary canal. This one is for my fellow young adults who have sunk to the bottom of the ocean instead of swimming and enduring through its currents. If your eyes have no joy left in them except for the occasional 10 minutes where bouts of passion seize you, watch this show. Uramichi-oniisan will make you laugh in a non-ending stream of sarcastic dark humor.

9.jujutsu kaisen

呪術廻戦- CURSE MAGIC

People usually watch Jujutsu Kaisen because of its epic animation, adrenaline-pumping fight scenes, interesting plot, and captivating characters. But what needs to be added to this catalog of reasons is the sheer hilarity of this show. Comedy isn’t the theme or the point of the story but is omnipresent throughout all of the series. There are no jokes made for the sake of laughers, only unbelievably random and absurd scenes or personality traits of characters that will make you laugh out loud and sometimes even pause in the middle of the episodes so that you can catch your breath. You will seldom find yourself bored while watching this one.

10.SAKAMOTO DESU GA

坂本ですが?- HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? I'M SAKAMOTO

Sakamoto is a flawless boy genius with exceptional allure and magnificent charm that captures the hearts of both girls and guys. His popularity also makes him acquire jealous enemies who look for ways to sabotage his image.

But alas, these enemies stand no chance because Sakamoto is the kind of guy who would have defeated the titans in AOT by putting bananas on the grass and making them all slip to their death. He’s the kind of guy who would make Nezuko turn back into a human by bitting her. He’s the kind of guy to eat all of Sukuna’s fingers in one go and make Sukuna turn into a poodle. He’s the kind of guy who would get in the *bleep* robot. The kind of… okay you get the point.

The comedic aspect of this show is on another level as they feature highly unpredictable events and situations that are so far-fetched but depicted in such a serious way that you can’t help but explode into laughter.

11.Daily Life of High School Boys

男子高校生の日常 - DANSHI KOUKOUSEI NO NICHIJOU

The title gives away the plot: it’s the daily life of high school boys, three of them to be exact. Although belonging to the slice-of-life genre, this anime is anything but ordinary. Through the eyes of our protagonists, everyday life becomes extraordinary as their imagination turns a casual walk into a samurai battle, a stroll down the river into a Shakespearean play, and a first meeting with a girl into a tragic romantic movie. This series relies on dramatic and comedic dialogue and narration that is taken to extremes. It will make you feel like you want to go back to your high school day as a boy, even if you are a girl and you’ve never been to high school.

12.Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun

月刊少女野崎くん - GEKKAN SHŌJO NOZAKI-KUN

Ah yes. To have the guts to confess to your crush only for him to think that you’re confessing to being a fan of his work. And for you to end up, not with a kiss, not with a hug, not even with a gentle dismissive tap on the shoulder, but with his autograph. Young love (* sips coffee *) is disastrous and awkward as ever.

Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun makes use of this plot, pumps it with cuteness and parody on steroids, and ends up with an anime so full of sweetness and hilarity that you will eventually want to send the creators of the show hate mail until they succumb and give us a second season.

13.The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

斉木楠雄のΨ難 - SAIKI KUSUO NO Ψ-NAN

The potential and possibilities of comedy in Anime are endless as the genre doesn’t need to abide by the laws of physics or those of basic human psychology. To this infinite potential, add a main protagonist who is a psychic and has a range of supernatural abilities, and you will get a show so unexpected and limitless in its scenarios that you won’t run out of things to create and laugh at -which is probably why The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. has 151 episodes.

14.KONOSUBA:GOD’S BLESSING IN THIS WONDERFUL WORLD!

この素晴らしい世界に祝福を! - KONO SUBARASHII SEKAI NI SHUKUFUKU O!

I don’t like most Isekais I watch. There. I said it. I only watch Isekai because you guys like them, and we live in a capitalistic society where I need to write articles to eat. With that being said, Konosuba is one of my favorite Isekais because it is a parody of the genre and makes fun of every cliché trope ever created, which turns it into a weirdly realistic show. Here, the comedy doesn’t stem from wacky characters (Although there are plenty), but from dialogues, banters, and situations that are funny but in a very clever way.

15.Gintama

銀魂

Gintama has been going on for hundreds of episodes, so anyone who likes to become toxically and emotionally attached to an anime (One Piece fans, we salute you) is welcomed to join the fandom.

Often referred to as the funniest Anime ever invented, this is a show that parodies and references everything under the sun, from popular movies and science to other Anime series or games. It doesn't have a main storyline but centers around the adventures of a group of friends following 'The Way of the Samurai' while they go on odd jobs in a feudal Japanese city ruled by aliens. For me, watching Gintama is the equivalent of drinking alcohol: you won't like the taste at first, but will eventually learn to… well yeah... no... you'll continue not to like the taste, but it will become funnier the more you watch it - and probably bad for you because of the ungodly amount of time you'll spend watching it.

Gintama has a lot of references and inside jokes that you might not get if you don't usually watch Anime, in that case, feel free to pretend-laugh so that no one notices your lack of culture.

16.Asobi Asobase

あそびあそばせ - Asobi Asobase: Workshop of Fun

Asobi Asobase centers around a group of friends and their ongoing quest for fun. To serve this goal, they create the 'Pastime Club' to play games and fool around after class. Although this anime has a normal setting, it is anything but normal: not one single episode passes through which fits of giggles and laugher won't seize your body and make it twitch in weird ways. Asobi Asobase's animation changes to depict and enhance the feelings of each character, which will at times make you feel like you're watching a slice of life show, a samurai performing seppuku, or got thrown into one of Van Gogh's paintings (after he cut his ear).

17.Chio's school road

ちおちゃんの通学路 - Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro

Chio's school road is another anime that gives away its plot through its title: the story focuses on the road to school that Chio takes every day. At first, I kept thinking, "How on earth are they going to make the simple act of going to school interesting or funny?" but alas, they (the creators) kept on succeeding and proving me wrong every new episode I watched. This show has tons of humor with side characters that are very different from one another: some are pure-hearted, others are downright evil, and the comical aspects vary as much as their personalities. One thing to point out is that the main Chio is very much into gaming, so there are many references to both games and anime like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Bioshock, or Assasin's Creed that you might not get if you're not immersed in that world.

18.The devil is a part-timer

はたらく魔王さま! - Hataraku Maou-sama!

On the verge of losing a battle on an alternate world, Satan manages to open up a portal that leads to Earth which he escapes to with his demon general Alsiel. Finding himself in modern-day Japan and running low on magic (and cash), he is forced to take up a part-time job at MgRonald's to try and survive in today's disastrous economy. This reverse-Isekai premise tinted with madness, is a hilarious and bizarre type of slice-of-life anime. It is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, especially when Satan and his friends reverse to their language - think Japanese with a heavy English accent.

20.Great Teacher Onizuka

グレート・ティーチャー・オニヅカ- GURĒTO TĪCHĀ ONIZUKA

Looking to turn his life around, 20-something ex-hoodlum Eikichi Onizuka decides to become a teacher and accordingly starts his training. Unfortunately for him, he seems to always get assigned with classes of delinquents who are hell-bent on getting him fired. But, what these troublemakers don't know is that they just might have met their match in Onizuka, who used to be one of the greatest gang leaders to have ever lived. One thing to point out: since this is an older anime from the 90s, expect some themes and humor that might be viewed as inappropriate today.
