+INGREDIENTS

Ingredients of the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask: Water/Aqua/Eau, Butylene Glycol (Moisturizer + Solvent), Glycerin, Trehalose (Moisturizing), Methyl Trimethicone (Solvent), 1,2-Hexanediol (Solvent),, Squalane, Phenyl Trimethicone (Emollient), Pca Dimethicone, Caprylyl Methicone (Emollient), Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer (Viscosity Controlling), Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, Carbomer (Viscosity Control), Propanediol (Solvent, Moisturizer/Humectant), Tromethamine (Buffering), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer (Viscosity Controlling+ Emulsion Stabilising), Glyceryl Caprylate (Preservative), Ethylhexylglycerin (Preservative + Deodorant), Disodium Edta (Chelating), Raffinose (Moisturizer/Humectant), Stearyl Behenate, Malachite Extract, ♦️Fragrance/Parfum, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate (Emulsifying), Inulin Lauryl Carbamate (Surfactant + Emulsifying), Tranexamic Acid, Tryptophan, Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide Mea, Beta-Glucan, ♦️Limonene, Acorus Gramineus Extract,♦️ Linalool, Tocopherol.

🌊In-Depth Details Of Interesting Ingredients:

Glycerine: Widely used as a quality Hydrator (occurs naturally in skin and its chemical structure attracts water). You can find this ingredient in most good skin-replenishing products.

Squalane: Squalene is naturally produced by the body, but its production slows dramatically after age 30. Squalane is its synthetic counterpart and repairs, deeply moisturizes, and has anti-aging benefits.

Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate: 🔴[Not enough research] Potentially Soothing and Anti-irritant when present at at least 5% in concentration.

Malachite Extract: 🔴[Not enough research] Judging by the color of this product and the lack of pigment in it, I’m guessing this is Malachite green, a green pigment. According to what I could find (which isn’t much), this should be a safe pigment when used topically on intact skin. More research is needed to claim any benefits, but popular media likes to associate ‘antioxidative,’ and ‘detoxifying’ claims to it.

Tranexamic Acid: Potentially Brightening (Anti-hyperpigmentation)

Tryptophan: 🔴[Not enough research] Potentially Wound-healing

Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide Mea (also known as Ceramide PC-104): 🔴[Not enough research] A lab-synthesized ceramide that is said to mimic the effects of Ceramide 3 (a ceramide that makes up about 22.1% of the skin’s uppermost layer and helps in the maintaining of moisture/hydration and skin barrier functions). According to manufacturers, it ‘‘improves dry skin by repairing the skin barrier function and increasing water content in skin’’

Beta-Glucan: Protects against irritation and environmental stress (the molecules link together to form a barrier on the surface of your skin) + Antibacterial (stimulate white blood cells to attack pathogens) + Hydrating (acts as a humectant (chemical structure attracts and traps water molecules)) + Anti-aging (Boosts collagen production)

Acorus Gramineus Root/Stem Extract: 🔴[Not enough research] Potentially anti-hyperpigmentation

Tocopherol: Vitamin E (Most abundant antioxidant found in human skin, works as a photo-protective agent + Anti-inflammatory ). Popular culture suggests that it also helps in wound healing, but this is not adequately backed up by research.

♦️Controversial Ingredient:

Fragrance/Parfum + Limonene + Linalool: A lot of people assimilate alcohol and fragrances in skincare to dehydration and irritation. I would recommend that you watch this video: "Is Alcohol Safe in Skincare Products?" (by Liah Yoo, who worked at Korea's largest beauty company, AmorePacific, and now also has her own brand: KraveBeauty) and consult the links provided in the infobox which refer to published scientific studies and articles. The main point is: yes, alcohol and fragrance can be very stripping and irritating to the skin, but it all depends on how they are used and combined in the final formulation (their ratio, the reactions they have with other ingredients, etc.…).

+how to use the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

[REVIEW] Laneige Water Sleeping Mask Texture

-1. After face cream, apply evenly across the face.

-2. After the product is absorbed completely, leave treatment overnight and rinse off in the morning.

-3. Use once or twice a week.

+what does the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask do?

Claims taken from the Laneige product page.

1.An overnight, hydrating gel mask that quickly absorbs while you sleep to deeply hydrate skin: Yes, this mask gets absorbed by the skin super quickly. It’s also very hydrating, and you’ll wake up with skin that will look well-rested (even if you don’t feel like you’re well-rested, which is the constant of my life). However, I had one issue with this product: if I applied it the way I would a mask (so using more than I would with a normal moisturizer), I ended up with some bumps and pimples. This is because when you pile it on, some of the gel doesn’t get absorbed and sits on top of your skin. This extra layer is a breeding ground for bacteria which can eventually cause bumps. If you apply the mask as you would a moisturizer, you won’t have this problem.

2.The following points are the results Laneige got from a 4-week clinical study. I’m going to quickly comment on them without going overboard:

+Increase in the look of brightness: +1.45%: No, I mean, my skin looked brighter because it was glowing a bit more, but the complexion didn’t improve. Check out the Some By Mi Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum for complexion improvement.
+Strengthens skin's moisture barrier: +15.2%: Any amount of hydration will contribute to a stronger skin’s moisture barrier, so yes, but don’t expect this product to magically heal your skin because it won’t. Check out the I’m From Honey Mask for more potent effects. Another thing to point out is that this mask contains perfume which isn’t really an ingredient you’d want in a skincare product you’re using to improve your skin’s barrier.
+Increase skin glow : +33.67%: Yes. But like I mentioned above, you might get pimples or bumps if you layer it on, so since I was personally restricted by how much of the product I could apply on my skin, I didn’t get as much of a glow as I would have if I used more.
+Increase in hydration : +25.01%: Yes.
+Increase in clarity: +11.5%: No. (note that clarity is the skin’s look when it comes to complexion/dark spots/clogged pores)

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask (Before and After)

As you can see from the before and after pictures, my skin doesn’t have a hydration problem to begin with. But I did have a few dry/reddened patches because of skin barrier issues which the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask managed to hydrate and sooth. It also plumped my fine lines the tiniest bit.

All in all, while I enjoyed using the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, using it as a mask made me breakout, and using it as a moisturizer made it a ‘meh’ product. It’s nice, and it’s hydrating. It has some cool ingredients. But you layering it on might cause pimples, and the hydration and moisture it provides as a moisturizer is adequate, not more.

As for recommendations:

  • 🏜️Dry skin types: You could probably use more of the product than I did and would end up with better results, but I think that the possibility that this might give you pimples isn’t worth the investment. Check out the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask instead.

  • 👉👈Sensitive skin types: I don’t like recommending fragrance products to sensitive skin types, so no.

  • 😬Normal skin types: You’d probably like it.

  • 🧠Mature skin types: People with more mature skin tend to have fewer lipids/ceramides, so you would enjoy this mask but don’t expect anything miraculous to come of it. It’s just good hydration.

  • ☯️Combination skin types: If you want to use this as a moisturizer instead of a mask, then yes. Be careful with it as a mask and monitor your skin for any acne breakouts.

  • 🛢️Oily skin types: I think you’d greatly enjoy using this as a moisturizer like I did because it’s not overpowering. Using this as a mask has a greater chance of making you breakout.

  • ⛰️Acne skin types: No. There is no need to risk acne breakout when you have acneic skin. For specific acne products, check out this post: [10] Anti-Acne products that actually work + A Skincare routine. And if you’re looking for a good moisturizer that will give you glowing skin and has low chances of making you break out, check out the AXIS-Y Cera-Heart My Type Duo Cream, which doesn’t have any fragrance and is way more hydrating than this Laneige mask.

I personally wouldn’t the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask because of the presence of fragrance in the formulation and the fact that there are better masks and moisturizers out there for the same price.

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

+BENEFITS:

  1. A little goes a long way

  2. Moisturizing

  3. Hydrating

  4. Very nice texture

  5. Cooling to the skin

-CONS:

  1. Presence of fragrance which has the potential to sensitize and irritate your skin

  2. Layering it on might give you pimples/bumps

🌊🌊🌊Score: 2.5/5 ——— Used as a mask this gave me a few pimples. Used as a moisturizer, it’s okay but nothing too incredible.
