🎐In-depth Details Of Interesting Ingredients:

Glycerine: Widely used as a quality Hydrator (occurs naturally in skin, and its chemical structure attracts water). You can find this ingredient in most good skin-replenishing products.

Diglycerin: "A natural moisturizing factor that reduces water evaporation from the upper layer of the skin and helps to keep water in the skin so that it stays nicely hydrated. Compared to glycerin, it has a larger molecular structure (kind of double glycerin). Thanks to this, it penetrates slower into the skin but gives longer-lasting moisture and is less sticky."

NiacinamideAnti-aging (promotes collagen production and Ceramides synthesis) + Antioxidant (Against UV-induced photocarcinogenesis and photo immunosuppression) + Anti-inflammatory ( Possible reductions in total sebaceous creation of lipids, overproduction being one of the causes of acne) + Anti-hyperpigmentation (Inhibits Melanin pigment to reach most skin cells)

Centella Asiatica Extract: Wound healing (promotes collagen production) + hypertrophic scar healing properties in particular

Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract: Antioxidant (Phenolic compounds) + Hydrating + Reduces Hyperpigmentation + Skin soothing + Anti-aging

Laminaria Japonica Extract: Hydrating + Moisturizing

Eclipta Prostrata Leaf ExtractAntioxidative + Potentially Photoprotective

Melia Azadirachta Leaf ExtractAntibacterial + Antifungal + Anti-inflammatory

Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract: Antifungal (hydroxycoumarin) + Anti-inflammatory (Monoterpenes)

Theobroma Cacao Seed Extract: Photoprotection (Polyphenols) + Antioxidant + Anti-inflammatory + Anti-aging (Increases skin elasticity by increasing expression pattern of glycosaminoglycans and types of collagen)

Artemisia Princeps Extract: Antioxidant (Activates a pathway that leads to the expression of antioxidant enzymes) + Anti-inflammatory (Upregulates the expression of Filaggrin and Loricin, two proteins involved in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. A lack of them is associated with skin inflammation and even eczema and psoriasis.)

Dioscorea Japonica Root Extract: 🔴[Not enough research]  Potentially Antioxidative + Potentially Anti-inflammatory Potentially Wound-healing

Calendula Officinalis Flower ExtractAnti-inflammatory + Antioxidant

Portulaca Oleracea ExtractAntioxidant (high amounts of Vitamins A and C) + Wound-healing (Decreases surface area of the Wound and increases tensile strength to 'seal' wound) + Anti-inflammatory (diminishes inflammatory response pathway)

Houttuynia Cordata Extract + Houttuynia Cordata Powder: Antibiotic + Anti-inflammatory + Antioxidative + has commonly been used in Eastern Asian countries such as Japan as a topical treatment against puss-containing skin diseases, including furuncle due to its high antimicrobial activity.

Spiraea Ulmaria ExtractAntioxidant + Calms Redness + Potentially regulates skin oil production

Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower): Emollient (Softens and soothes and acts as a moisturizer) + Hydration (Fatty Acids) + Anti-inflammatory (Linoleic acid)

Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil: Perfuming (Assessed as non-irritating/non-sensitizing/non-toxic by The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel) + Anti-inflammatory (Guaiazulene) + Anti-bacterial + Potentially wound-healing

Panthenol: Moisturizing (penetrates deep into the layers and gets converted into Pantothenic Acid (B5)) + Possibly Anti Acne (B5) + Wound healing ("Promotes skin cell proliferation") + Anti-inflammatory ("Help reduce the appearance of UV-induced redness and may alleviate the itchiness associated with dermatitis.") + Skin barrier protection (B5 is involved in the creation of lipids, which themselves play a significant role in preventing moisture loss from the top layer of the skin)

Allantoin: Moisturizing ( Emollient: provides a layer of protection to help prevent water loss)

Beta-Glucan [source] which: Protects against irritation and environmental stress (the molecules link together to form a barrier on the surface of your skin) + Antibacterial/Wound healing (stimulate white blood cells to attack pathogens) + Hydrating (acts as a humectant (chemical structure attracts and traps water molecules)) + Anti-aging (Boosts collagen production) + Antioxidant

Ceramide NP: "This lipid prevents the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin, from losing moisture. When people experience dry skin, it is because of a loss of ceramides in the skin, which can also cause itching, flaking, peeling, and scaling."

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acidHyaluronic Acid is a relatively big molecule that tends not to penetrate the skin very deep. After its rise in popularity, different formulators have created smaller or different versions of this molecule. Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid means that this molecule has been ruptured into smaller parts. Depending on the final size of the molecule, it can have different properties. AXIS-Y does not specify the size, but the properties all center around hydration/moisture, some even exhibiting anti-inflammatory and skin-repairing properties.

Madecassoside: Derivative of Centella Asiatica Extract: Wound healing + hypertrophic scar healing properties + promotes collagen production (Acts as an Antioxidant). - "Madecassoside can also help in burn wound healing through increasing antioxidant activity and enhancing collagen synthesis."

♦️Controversial Ingredients:
Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) OilMostly acts as a perfuming agent, some recent studies suggest possible skin-calming benefits, but this is dependent on people as some are irritated by the oil (if present in abundant quantity)

Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel OilAntimicrobial +Antifungal + Perfuming + Mildly phototoxic

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf OilAntimicrobial + Antioxidant + Perfuming

Aniba Rosodora (Rosewood) Wood Oil: Antimicrobial + Antioxidant Perfuming

Some types of skins easily get irritated by essential oils, others don’t react in any way, if you’re interested, I’d recommend reading this blog post [Are Essential Oils in Skin Care Harmful or Helpful?] by The Klog for more information.

+what does the AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask do?

Claims from the AXIS-Y product page.

1. Moisturize and reinforce the skin’s natural barrier function: I would not qualify this mask as a moisturizer. If your skin is dry and you use this, it might gain the tiniest bit of moisture/hydration, but you will still need to follow up with another product. However, it does a fantastic job at reinforcing the skin’s barrier. Here’s a quick reminder on this:

A compromised skin barrier constitutes of the following points: Dryness, tightness, flakiness, inflammation, acne (in places you don't usually get acne), itchiness, stinginess, and sensitivity to a good portion of skin products. If you have a combination of these issues, your skin barrier is probably not in top shape. There are several articles and research papers that have investigated how skin barriers heal. I'll refer to this one: Repairing a Compromised Skin Barrier in Dermatitis: Leveraging the Skin's Ability to Heal Itself [source] as it is the most comprehensive and straight to the point one I could find. Essentially, the article states that an unhealthy skin barrier results in a lipid deficiency; these are essential components of skin cells and aid in the maintenance of moisture, protection, and repair processes. This deficiency often leads to the activation of skin inflammation, initially triggered to aid the skin in its reparation (since inflammation is a defense mechanism), but with a compromised skin barrier, the mechanism often overshoots and results in a "dry, scaly, inflamed and irritated skin." At this point, your skin becomes prone to "excessive water loss, deficient lipid production, an elevated pH, susceptibility to infection and inflammation (acne), and contact sensitization (you become sensitive to products you wouldn't normally react to)." Hence, to aid in the healing of your skin barrier, you will need to provide it with: hydration to minimize water loss, moisture to act as a barrier against irritants and allergens, and minimize inflammation and sensitizers exposure (like fragrance or exfoliating agents).

The majority of the ingredients that this mask is composed of are anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and antioxidative. The AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask also has important skin compounds like Panthenol, Allantoin, Beta-Glucan, Ceramide NP, and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid. However, these are present at the bottom of the list: they are either very low in concentrations or high in concentrations, which would mean that the essential oils (present above them) are even higher in concentration. Since this product doesn’t particularly smell like anything, I don’t think that’s the case, so they are probably in too low of concentrations to really do anything. Regardless, all in all, this claim checks out.

IAXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask (Before and After) 1

2. Repairs and soothes dull and irritated skin: As you can see from the before and after pictures below, I had a bit of irritation with some redness and acne surges (due to me over-using a clay product whoopsie). After two weeks of using this mask three times a week, my skin barrier is back on track, I have no acne whatsoever, and my skin has calmed down.

3. Brightens and evens skin tone: The AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask has some ingredients that can reduce hyperpigmentation (Niacinamide and Fig extract), so in theory, this checks out. In actuality, while I did notice an overall brightening, it wasn’t anything too noteworthy, and my acne scars didn’t lighten up. I think the brightening comes more from the fact that my skin barrier became healthier rather than some anti-hyperpigmentation mechanism. Using this product will aid in the fading of scars since healthy skin heals itself more efficiently, but if you’re specifically looking for something to even out your skin tone, try the SOME BY MI Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum (13.8$ for 30ml) instead.

AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask (Before and After) 2

I immensely enjoyed using this product, especially during the hot months of Beirut, because its gel texture kept it cool on the skin. Unlike other masks of its type, it also doesn’t slide down the face. I also used it before and during my period and did not get any period acne, so it works really well in maintaining an overall healthy skin balance.

The only thing I don’t like about the AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask is the fact that it has so many essential oils. I mention this in most of my reviews, but basically, all perfuming compounds have the possibility to irritate any type of skin. Even if your skin doesn’t react to a perfuming compound, it might in the future as it gets more and more exposed to it - kind of like how the sun doesn’t immediately make you have wrinkles. I would have preferred this product not to have perfuming compounds, but alas, people like nice smelling stuff, apparently. However, since this is a wash-away product, I’m okay with the essential oils since they don’t sit on your skin for extended periods. The texture of the product and the fact that it’s not very hydrating or moisturizing also make it seem that it is not very penetrating, which is great because it means the essential oils have a low chance of actually being irritating.

Now, as for recommendations, people with a compromised skin barrier (think acne or irritated skin) would benefit the most from this mask. I am reluctant to advise you to try it (again due to essential oils). However, from my own personal experience and my overall outlook on the formulation, I feel that there are so many anti-inflammatory ingredients present in this product that they counterbalance any negative effect you might have from exposure to the essential oils. However, take this with a grain of salt. I’m not a chemist. Note: I have acne-prone combination skin. I also have a very sensitive lip/surrounding mouth area, and using the mask there didn’t make it burn or react in any way.

Anyone with normal skin that isn’t red or flaky wouldn’t really benefit from using the AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask. You’d be better off using an ampoule or a serum instead, like The Plant Base Time Stop Collagen Ampoule or AXIS-Y Artichoke Intensive Skin Barrier Ampoule. If you have mature skin, this also won’t help you. Try an anti-aging serum instead, like the SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense Serum.

[REVIEW] AXIS-Y New Skin Resolution Gel Mask

+BENEFITS:

  1. Greatly reduces skin redness and irritation

  2. Reduces acne breakouts and inflamed

  3. Contributes to a healthier skin barrier

  4. The nice cooling feeling upon first application

  5. Easy to remove

-CONS:

  1. Presence of Essential Oils which could potentially irritate sensitive skin

🌱🌱Score: 3.9/5 --- I immensely enjoyed using this product, and the results I got with it are great. It would have gotten a fuller score if it didn't have essential oils and if it was more hydrating.
