+INGREDIENTS

Ingredients of the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner: Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol (Solvent), Butylene Glycol (Moisturizer + Solvent), Bis-Peg-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane (Emollient + Moisturizer), Hydroxyethylcellulose (Viscosity Control), Carbomer (Viscosity Control), Arginine

In-Depth Details Of Interesting Ingredients:

Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract: [CONSTITUTES 91.3% OF THE ENTIRE FORMULA] Photoprotective: Inhibits aging pathways that are usually activated by UVB irradiation on skin and usually lead to skin inflammation and photo-ageing. For example, it stimulated the collagen synthesis pathway that would have otherwise been inhibited by UVB +Anti-aging ( Promotes DNA repair pathways and elongation of shortened telomeres (shortening is strongly associated with aging)) + Wound Healing (Suppresses inflammation pathway and stimulates cell growth) *not many research on topical benefits

Arginine: Antioxidant + Hydrating (acts as a humectant (chemical structure attracts and entraps water molecules)) + Anti-aging (increases collagen production through different pathways)

+how to use the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner

1.Take an appropriate amount and apply it to the whole face

2.Pat for absorption

3.If the weather is very dry, repeat 3/5 times

+what does the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner do?

Points taken from the Pyunkang Yul website: I translated everything from Korean, using an app, but basically the claims boil up to these points

1.Enhanced skin elasticity and vitality: I couldn’t find any research on the topical skin effects of Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract on elastase (the enzyme which degrades elastin which gives your skin its elasticity), research does exist which link its oral intake to an inhibition of the enzyme, but topical intake of active compounds is very different. I personally didn’t really notice any difference after 2 months of usage. As for skin vitality, I also didn’t really notice any big change, whether I would stop using the product for a few days or not, my skin still looked the same.

2.Very hydrating: This is not very hydrating for my standards. I developed extremely dry skin during this winter, I even got a few dry patches here and there and this did absolutely nothing for them. I would apply the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, and 5 minutes later, the dry patches would reappear. When I used the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner instead, the dry patches would disappear for a good part of the day. I did try the 7 skin method, and it is a suitable toner for this method, and my skin was well hydrated after using it, but… what toner would not be hydrating after you’ve splashed it onto your skin 7 times? I think this would be considered hydrating during the summertime, but if it’s cold or wintertime wherever you live, this would barely pass as hydrating. However, for oily skin types, no matter the season, you’ll probably really like this toner.

I did not get clogged pores nor did my skin breakout but some people have reported that this broke them out. I could not find any corrolation with Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract and acne (unless you’re alergic). People seem to blame the presence of silicones in the product, but Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane is water soluble which makes it even more suitable for sensitive skin (usually silicones are oil soluble) and silicones get a bad reputation without a scientific basis (they’re some of the most breathable synthetic layers out there). Perhaps the people with these reactions are alergic to one of the ingredients or sensitized to silicones. If you’ve had a bad experience with silicones in the past or you want to stay in the safe side because you’re acne prone, but still want to try this product out you can always buy the 4.90$(30ml Link) version first and test it out.

Would I recommend this? Only if you have oily skin and didn’t like the klairs toner. And maybe if you live somewhere really hot where you only want a bit of simple hydration. Otherwise, stick to the klairs one.

+benefits:

  1. Simple formulation with simple ingredients, so the chance of any of them freaking out your skin is very low

  2. Very good product to layer on (if that’s your thing)

  3. Reasonable price for the amount of product you get

-CONS

  1. Doesn’t work well during colder months

  2. Not as hydrating as it claims

❃Score: 2.5/5 --- I don’t care much for this product. I’m sure this would work well during summer, but I prefer an all-encompassing hydrating toner like the Klairs one I mentioned because I can use it and expect reliable results no matter what the weather is like.
