[REVIEW] Skin&Lab Red Serum (Before and After)

This is a product I saw circulating here and there on different k-beauty channels and it made me want to try it out. I was on Yesstyle once and saw it priced down to 14$ instead of its usual 36$ and immediately added it to my cart. I have bought a second bottle since (part of another deal that Yesstyle and skin&lab had) and really enjoy using this product.

In-Depth Details Of Interesting Ingredients:

Sodium Hyaluronate : Hydrating (water binding properties) + Wound healing (promotes micro circulation)

Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract: Wound healing ( Polyphenols and tannins) + Anti-acne (Tannins) + Antioxidant

Punica Granatum Fruit Extract: Antioxidant (Vitamin C and polyphenols) + Anti-aging (Stimulates keratinocytes proliferation and inhibits collagen breaking enzymes) + Anti-inflammatory (Polyphenols)

Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract: Antioxidant (Polyphenols + Vitamin C) + Protects against UV damage (Gallic acid ) + Anti-Aging (Resveratrol reduces production of enzymes that break down collagen)

Rubus Chamaemorus Fruit Extract: Anti-microbial (Polyphenols) + Antioxidant (Vitamin C + Polyphenols)

Lycium Chinense Fruit Extract: Antioxidant (Vitamin B, C, taurine, and carotenoids) + Might promote wound healing but little research is available
Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract: Antioxidant (Vitamin C, beta-carotene, glutathione, quercetin, and vitamin E) + Prevents hyper-pigmentation (Inhibits Melanin forming activity of Tyrosinase)

Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract (Acai): Antioxidant (Flavonoids + polyphenols + Anthocyanins) + Vitamins A, C and E are all present in the fruit, but little research has been made on them in Acai (keep in mind that molecular forms and stability/penetrability/quality of these vitamins vary, so even if an ingredient contains them, it doesn’t always mean it actually does something when topically applied)

Lepidium Sativum Sprout Extract: Contains an Antioxidant (Sulforaphane) that has been proven to inhibit melanin formation which consequently brightens up skin and fades dark spots.

Niacinamide: Anti-aging (promotes collagen production and Ceramides synthesis) + Antioxidant (Against UV-induced photocarcinogenesis and photoimmunesuppression) + Anti-inflammatory ( reductions in total sebaceous creation of lipids, overproduction being one of the causes of acne)

Dioscorea Opposita (Wild Yam) Root Extract: Prevents hyper-pigmentation (Diosgenin inhibits melanogenesis) + Anti-inflammatory + Anti-aging (Disturbs collagen destroying enzymes)

Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract: Anti-inflammatory (Pentacyclic triterpenes) + Treatment of photo-aged skin (Mechanism are not well understood but check the link to the study by clicking on the ingredient)

Arginine: Antioxidant + Hydrating (acts as a humectant (chemical structure attracts and entraps water molecules)) + Anti-aging (increases collagen production through different pathways)

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate: Prevents hyper-pigmentation (Inhibits Melanin forming activity of Tyrosinase) + Help preserve hyaluronic acid content in skin

Adenosine: Anti-aging (collagen stimulation pathway) + Wound healing (collagen stimulation pathway) + Anti-inflammatory (inhibits neutrophils, white blood cells part of the inflammation response)

Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Oil: Used as a fragrance here.

+Here’s an article on the probable drawbacks of using Witch Hazel: [Why Witch Hazel is a Problem for Skin] by Paula’s choice. But in the end, it all comes down to the formulation, how it’s incorporated with the rest of the ingredients and your sensitivity levels.

+Fragrant components of Jasmine oil and Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract have the potential to be sensitizing.

+how to use the Skin&Lab Red Serum

1.Apply serum over the entire face after toning.

2.Massage to aid absorption.

+what does the Skin&Lab Red Serum do?

If you click on the Yesstyle product link and scroll down, you’ll see an e-brochure by Skin&Lab advertising the Red Serum, a lot of claims are made so I grouped them together when they’re repetitive.

1.Skin Firming: I’ve been using this serum for the past 4 months and have not experienced any skin firming. The ingredients themselves aren’t specifically geared towards a firming result (they don’t specifically promote Elastin expression and production) unlike those of the Wild Seed Firming Water.

2.Brightening, [Brightly glowing skin] maximizes skin vitality and promotes circulation so your skin tone becomes brighter and more transparent: Yes, this serum made my skin brighter, the ingredients are full of antioxidants and pigmentation correcting agents, they work in conjunction to slowly but surely fade away hyperpigmentation and acne scars (you will probably start noticing results after a month). As for it making your skin ‘glow’, I couldn’t really tell on my skin since I always hydrate and moisturize it so this didn’t really make a difference, but judging from the ingredients, anti-oxidative cocktails do tend to make your skin ‘glow’.

3.[Skin soothing effect with full hydration] Complete healthy skin by balancing sebum and moisture of sensitive skin: The Red Serum is not a hydrating serum, if you have dry skin and you want a product to quench that dryness, this ain’t it. Yes, it is composed of hydrating and moisturizing ingredients here and there, but that is not its main function in any way. If you’re looking for something hydrating, you’re better off with trying a mask (Honey based ones like this one or this one) As for balancing sebum production, my oily T-zone stayed oily without any noticeable change, and to balance it out I usually use a clay mask twice a week, which I stopped doing for the purpose of this review but will gladly restart now that It’s complete.

4.[Feel the change in 5 days] Vitalize skin by correcting the fundamental problems (which according to them are: whitening, wrinkle care, nutrition, and hydration): Let me start by saying that rare are the serums that have a positive change that can be seen on your skin whiten that range of time. And if they do, you can’t see the change, it’s so small that you won’t even notice it. The red serum falls in that category: no you won’t see a change in 5 days. Your skin will probably get more nutrition than it usually does but you won’t feel that change. As for the whitening/wrinkle care/ hydration, these aren’t things you’ll even notice have been targeted within that small of an amount of time.

5.[Color Therapy with phyto red complex] Red extracts from nature protects from oxidation and keeps your face looking young and healthy: Is color therapy a legit thing? yes, and not just when it comes to skincare, check out this article if you aren’t convinced. However, the red serum is not red in any way, the actual mixture is transparent, what is red are some of the fruit extracts its ingredients originate from. The properties of these extracts are what is going to protect your skin from oxidation (since a lot of them are anti-oxidants) and will keep your face looking young and healthy (I attest to that), but color therapy is not involved in any way shape or form.

6.Wrinkle care: I can’t tell you if this is going to fade away your wrinkles (it probably won’t) but what I can say is that it will diminish your fine lines and the ingredients the serum is composed of are in majority antioxidants, photo protectants, and anti-inflammatory ones, all of these are anti-aging and prevent premature skin aging. The red serum won’t take care of your winkle now but will take care of your future ones by working as a preventative product.

I think that every good 20-year-old’s skincare routines should focus on brightening up the face and preventing aging, there aren’t really any sensitizing or irritating ingredients (except if you’re allergic to almonds, since it contains sweet almond oil), the serum isn’t harsh on the skin in any way, and no particularly comedogenic ingredients (Some claims are made about Butylene Glycol being an acne irritant but there are no supportive studies on this, and it has even been used in some acne creams without any adverse effect, as someone who has hormonal acne-prone skin, I saw no adverse effects). Point is, this serum can be used by any skin type, you’ll probably benefit from it whether you have oily, sensitive, normal, or combination skin.

However, if your routine already intensely focuses on brightening up your skin and is packed full of anti-aging anti-oxidative ingredients and products, you probably won’t notice any results by adding this serum to your regimen. I myself wouldn’t be satisfied with just this serum (to be fair, I haven’t been satisfied by any one product when it comes to anti-aging and prefer having a regimen) and rather use it as an add-on to other anti-aging products.

+benefits:

  1. Dries up quickly

  2. Smells wonderful (if you like the smell of Jasmine)

  3. Great ingredients that work for a brightening/preventative routine

-CONS:

  1. Advertised for things it simply does not do/have.

🔴Score: 3.5/5 --- Honestly, this would have gotten a full 4.0, even 4.5 if its claims weren’t so wild, I really don’t like it when a company advertises false assertions about their products. If however, you can look past all that pointless marketing, it’s a pretty great product.
